MISHA GLENNY ON EUROPE: FROM PEACE PROJECT TO SURVIVAL
‘We’re at a uniquely difficult and dangerous moment.’
Misha Glenny is best known as the author of McMafia,
the book about international organised crime that inspired
the BBC TV drama of the same name. He's also a veteran
Eastern Europe reporter and historian of the Balkans. In
an interview that ranges from cross-border smuggling to
climate change, Misha talks to us about Brexit, Europe and
the wider world. Setting Europe in a global context, he
identifies the roots of the present situation in the 2008
financial crisis and the growth of wealth inequality.
‘We have to recognise that Europe is in long term
decline. What that means is that the European project
becomes more important than it did before. Before, the
real significance of Europe was as a peace project. Now
it is a question of a survival project and weathering
the storm as China and the United States face up to each
other. So we need to strengthen the European project.’

European? ... Read

it's more likely that we'll end up with some form of Brexit.
But while it's possible, we have to continue.'
Sir Michael Arthur, former UK EU negotiator: 'There's a 5-10
per cent chance that we won't' leave the EU, 'but we've got
to work with reality where we are, and we've got to make
sure that some of that fantastic benefit doesn't get lost.
The content and the absolute substance of Brexit is still
all to play for.'
Madeleina Kay, #EUSupergirl:
'I think the chances of Brexit not happening are 10 out of
10! If you don't believe that we can stop Brexit, we won't
be able to stop Brexit. If you believe that we can, we
